Baseline is just a quick glance at your 100 freestyle potential based on your threshold capabilities.  This may or may not line up with the reality of your actual race, but it will line up much of your training paces if you use actual times and test sets to determine your baseline.

The input of baseline is done in seconds, so a person with a time of 1:12 would input it as 72 seconds.

There are several ways to establish baselines, some of which are explained HERE.

It is recommended, if you are training consistently, that you re-check your speed every 6-8 weeks by doing one or more of the recommended test sets.

Coaches, both competitive swimming and triathlon, absolutely need to know the true capabilities of the athletes in order to offer the most effective program.  Failure to specialize training will always result in less than special performances.
